The Social Studies Learning Community

I have used History Alive for the past several years. I  usually spend five days on a chapter. I skip the ones that don't really meet our TEKS - like 2 and 8. If it is a long activity (like Williamsburg or the debate) I allow 7 days.

How much time do you have for SS each day? I have 50 minutes, which I sometimes stretch into reading time if I need to finish up. We are self-contained so I have a little more flexibility. For long activities, like the sunken ship and the debate, I block out two hours in the day and finish it all at once.

Sometimes we read the whole chapter together first, and then they do the activity and the notes at once.

I use the Harcourt book only as a supplement when I don't feel like the History Alive book has adequately covered the TEKS.

We will be finishing up the American Revolution and starting on the Constitution in mid-January. I follow the edsoft timetable.

We also love History Alive! at Bear Creek.  We are implementing it for the first time this year.  The kids are so engaged and involved with the lessons.  They love it so much.  They can't wait for Social Studies!

We are also frustrated with the time frame.  We just completed chapter 7 but we feel like at this rate there is no way we will be where we need to be at the end of the year.  We were doing the Revolution in November last year, but this year it will be more like February.  I'm not sure what to do about that!!!

We have a 45 minute block daily for Social Studies.  We are spending about 2 weeks on a chapter.  I don't know how to shorten it.  

Any ideas on how to speed up the process or possibly leave out some steps?
